RFA Flute Choir Composition Competition
OVERVIEW:
The Rochester Flute Association announces a composition competition as part of its 2025 Annual
Flute Fair, which will be held in the fall of 2025 in Rochester, New York. The RFA was chartered
in 1995 and received non-profit status is 1998. We currently have an active membership base of
approximately 200 students, performers, private teachers, music educators, and adult amateurs in
the Rochester, New York area. We promote musical excellence, the enjoyment and appreciation
of the flute, and the exchange of ideas among flutists and flute enthusiasts.
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
Original compositions (no arrangements) for Flute Choir, approximately 5 to 7 minutes in
duration, scored for: Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Flute 4, Alto Flute, & Bass Flute; subsets
of this instrumentation will also be considered.
There are no age or nationality restrictions. Submitted works can have been previously
performed, but not published by a third party (self-published works are acceptable). Multiple
submissions are permissible, with a separate entry fee for each one.
The winner will be announced at the opening event of the Flute Fair on October 24, 2025.
Competitors will be notified via email within a few days of the announcement. The prize will be
adjudicated by a panel of judges selected by the Rochester Flute Association Board. A prize will
not be awarded if no composition is deemed worthy.
The winning composer must provide performance-ready score and parts to RFA, at no extra cost,
no later than July 30, 2025. Letter-size PDF score and parts are acceptable. All subsequent copies
of the winning score must include “First Prize in the 2025 Rochester Flute Association
Composition Competition” on the cover or first page of the score. The RFA shall retain a copy of
the score and parts for future performance.
PRIZE: The winner will receive a $500 cash price. Should the RFA record a live performance
of the work, the recording will be shared with the composer.
The composer will retain all rights to the composition.

The $15.00 entry fee can be paid using PayPal by searching for “@RochesterFluteAssoc”
Be sure to keep a copy the transaction ID number if you using PayPal.
Alternatively, a check postmarked no later than July 30, 2025 can be mailed to: Rochester Flute
